Brock Whitten

I write application using Ruby frameworks such as Ruby on Rails and Merb. I am intimate with RESTful principals and am known as an AJAX junkie. I think in terms of 'resources' and 'web services'. To me a website is only one of many ways to access a 'resource'. JSON, XML, YAML and HTTP are the data-types am most comfortable using. I am a believer in web standards and am passionate about best practices.

I have a strong background in graphic design. These skill have been crucial in my success as a software developer and I have won several rewards for my designs. I believe whole heartedly in open-source software and have a passion for furthering my local community. Most recently, I spoke at the RubyCamp conference. The topic was building a RESTful API using the Merb framework.

PmpknPi RESTful Blog API written in Merb

I founded this open source project a few weeks ago and it is moving along very quickly. It is build with a RESTful architecture and can sen and receive JSON, XML, HTTP and YAML for all methods. The javascript is completely Unobtrusive and degrades gracefully. Both Git and Subversions repositories are maintained for this project.

Comedy Fest Custom CMS using Ruby on Rails

In the spring of 2007 I developed this CMS for the Vancouver Comedy Fest. It gives them the ability to add link performers to venues, and to promote and post articles accordingly. Everything is custom made, including the Photo Gallery and the ability to add and remove pages. This application is also RESTful.

Famkin Social Family Tree application

What's a developer without a Social Networking site right? well this one is mine and I love it. Its not yet public but a beta test is near. This allows you to track your family and stay intouch with them im many interesting ways. They engine that tracks the relationship between people is really something worth seeing. I wish I could take full credit for this one but I have been working on it with a friend.
